Principal Electrical Engineer – Primary

Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth
$DOE, Negotiable

We’re working with an established engineering consultancy with presence across most states in Australia. Over the past 5 years they have expanded sustainably through an increase in project pipeline and are now looking for a talented Principal Electrical Engineer to work on exciting projects in solar, wind and BESS.

This role has two different career paths based on individual, either remaining hands on and technical in a subject maHer expert capacity or transitioning to people leadership and being responsible for improving operational excellence.

As Australia continues to ramp up renewable projects on its path to net-zero you will work directly with clients and see the impact of projects from start to finish.

Day-to-Day

Whilst the below are some of the key activities you’ll be working on, the list isn’t exhaustive and will depend on project scope. On a work-split level, there are field-based responsibilities with around 70% being in the office, and 30% on site (week-by-week).

  • Leading the electrical design for renewable energy projects across solar, wind and BESS.

  • Reviewing and signing off on electrical designs including substations, switchyards and grid connections.

  • Collaborating with clients and grid operators to guide projects from early-stage development through to commissioning.

  • Mentoring junior and mid-level engineers or stepping into a leadership track, depending on your career goals.

  • Supporting proposals, technical reports and helping shape the direction of projects nationally.

  • Keeping up to date with standards and regulatory frameworks.

Requirements
  • Full Australian working rights (unfortunately no sponsorship available)

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or similar

  • Hands on experience in-role, min 10+ years in renewable or energy space

  • Strong technical knowledge of HV primary design.

  • Previous consultancy or design firm experience.

  • Ability to lead projects and interface with clients confidently.

  • Strong understanding of Australian grid requirements and standards.

  • Either ready to mentor and lead others, or happy to stay hands-on as a subject matter expert
